Barytes, Barite or the Heavy Spar are the different names given to the same mineral having composition BaSO₄ (Barium Sulphate). Barytes has higher specific gravity and lower bulking value. It has low oil absorption and it has high resistance to acids and alkalies. The various grades of Barytes available are as under:

I. Special Coatings (Paint) Industry
II. Rubber Industry, It is used as filler
III. Glass Industry, It is used as a Clarifies and Homonizer
IV. Paper industry, It is used as filler for improving brightness and bulk.
V. Textile Industry
It is used as Filler in book binding cloths and PVC cloths.
VI. Chemical Industry, In the manufacture of Barium Chemicals.
VII. Oil well Drilling, In the manufacture of drilling mud for use in shallow and deep drilling.
